Guidance from The Prophet (saws)
Hadrat Abdullah Ibn Masud (r.a.) reported: 'The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Envy is permitted only in two cases: A man whom Allah gives wealth, and he disposes of it rightfully, and a man to whom Allah gives knowledge which he applies and teaches it.'''
Related by Bukhari and Muslim.
Commentary:
Jealousy, envy, or 'hasad' are evil traits and considered absolutely unlawful for the believers, except in two cases:
1. It is permissible for one to envy a believer whom the Lord Most Gracious has blessed with abundance, and this believer fears his Lord and spends his wealth in the Cause of Allah Subhanah.
2. It is permissible for one to envy a believer whom the Lord Most Gracious has blessed with religious knowledge, and this believer fears his Lord and applies and shares this bestowed knowledge for the good of mankind.
Envy here does not imply that the Lord take away the wealth or the knowledge He has bestowed on the other; but rather one desires that he too would be given wealth and knowledge and he too would expend it in the Cause of Allah like the other does.
